Reliance commissions
para-xylene plant at Jamnagar
Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) has successfully
commissioned the first phase of para-xylene (PX) plant Exxon Mobil Corp. and SABIC are advancing plans
at Jamnagar (Gujarat) recently. The plant with capacity of
2.2 MMTPA is built with crystallisation technology from BP
which is highly energy efficient and environment friendly.
With the commissioning of this plant, RIL’s PX capacity
will more than double from 2 MMTPA to 4.2 MMTPA. On
commissioning of entirepara-xylene capacity, RIL will be
the world’s second largest PX producer with 9 percent
of global PX capacity and 11 percent share of global
production. The new para-xylene capacity will add value
to the output from refineries and improve the profitability San Patricio County increasingly appeared to be the

The new capacity will complete the integration within
Reliance’s polyester value chain, leading to improved
margins and also strengthen its position inpolyester
industry globally. “Commissioning of the new para-xylene
plant marks beginning of the culmination of a series of
projects including the refinery off-gas cracker, ethane
import project and petcoke gasification.
These projects are part of the largest contemporary
investment, in excess of Rs 100,000 crore, in refining and
petrochemicals sector anywhere in the world. Our projects
are on schedule and at an advanced stage of mechanical
completion. The new PXcapacity takes us a step closer to
being among the top 10 petrochemical players globally.

Exxon Mobil Corp. and
SABIC advance plans to build
massive petrochem plant
to build a massive petrochemical plant north of
Corpus Christi - beyond the boundaries of two cities,
Portland and Gregory. The US$10 bln plant would
create an estimated 11,000 construction jobs and
600 permanent positions.
The companies announced the project in July with
four sites in mind - two in Louisiana and one other
in Texas near Victoria - before increasingly homing
in on San Patricio County late last year. Grass-roots
opposition picked up in the fall as word spread that
likely pick. As pressure mounted, the Portland City
Council made a non-binding ceremonial vote against
it in December, encouraging Exxon Mobil and SABIC
to build elsewhere.
Exxon and SABIC said they selected the site because
of its access to cheap and abundant natural gas from
Texas shale fields, as well as the proximity to ports,
railways and highways. The complex would include
the world's largest ethane cracker, which turns a
component of natural gas into ethylene, the primary
building block of most plastics, as well as other
plastics manufacturing operations. The plant could
come online as early as 2021.
