Maryland's New Year Changes: Plastic Bag Bans, Minimum Wage Hike, and Health Insurance Coverage
Rules
Starting January 1, 2024, Maryland will witness several impactful legal changes. The minimum wage is set to rise to $15
per hour, a year earlier than originally planned, affecting businesses of all sizes. Plastic bag bans will be extended in Anne
Arundel, Prince George’s, and Frederick counties, encouraging environmentally friendly practices. The Trans Health
Equity Act comes into effect, expanding Medicaid coverage for gender-affirming care, addressing the healthcare needs
of transgender adults.
Private insurance will also undergo modifications, with new laws preventing copayments for breast examinations and
ensuring coverage for biomarker testing. These changes aim to enhance healthcare accessibility and affordability for
Maryland residents. Additionally, the Stop the Spam Calls Act of 2023 will impose stricter regulations on telemarketing,
prohibiting the use of automated dialing systems or recorded messages without written consent. These comprehensive
measures reflect Maryland's commitment to wage equality, environmental sustainability, healthcare inclusivity, and
consumer protection.
