THE PRESIDENT SAYS
Working Towards The Change
AIPMA has been working incessantly for the cause of Plastics Industry and has been true to its
mantra ‘Say Yes to Plastics’. Despite the odds we have been taking the lead and in our endeavor
to ensure smooth transition AIPMA had been interacting with the decision makers to have the
transparency.
AIPMA along with MSME-Development Institute, Karnal, Haryana, organized two-series of
webinar to create awareness amongst the MSME fraternity for ensuring a smooth transition
for Single Use Plastic. The sessions conducted were a great success.
Historically AIPMA has been advocating the significance (that’s now become a necessity) of
having an effective Plastic Waste Management system in place and I am sure our seniors- the
earlier generation would vouch for this.
Plastics has been playing a pivotal role since its inception in the modern day packaging and further
contributing its share towards the economy. India’s Plastics export increased by a strong 55% Chandrakant Turakhia
(high double-digit growth) to USD 3,417 million (cumulative value) during April-to-June 2021 as
compared to USD 2,211 million during April-June 2020. Despite the pandemic, India’s cumulative
exports of plastics were nearly USD 10 billion in FY21. According to data India exported plastics
worth USD 1,301 million (up 60.4%) in June 2021 vis-à-vis USD 811 million in June 2020.
To be specific, Panels, such as Consumer & Houseware, Composites / FRP Products, Floor
Coverings, Leather Cloth and Laminates, Pipes & Fittings, Woven Sacks and FIBCs registered
good triple digit growth over 100% growth in global exports during Q1FY22. Panels such as
Writing Instruments (74%), Rigid Packaging & PET Preforms (52.6%), Cordage & Fishnets
(60.9%), Polyester Films (34.7%), and Plastics Raw Materials (16.9%) also showed high double-
digit growth in Q1FY22.
This shows that Plastics export is increasing. Favorable marketing conditions and increasing demand
for domestic goods in US and Europe are said to be the driving factors for the growth in exports.
The US and Europe markets account for 50% of the country's total plastic exports. The US, UK,
EU and France offer several opportunities for increasing exports of Make in India Plastics.
Our Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has called upon the industry and exporters to take
advantage of opportunities created in the post-COVID scenario, explore new destinations and
expand the export basket to achieve the ambitious target of USD 400 billion of exports. Also
the Union Ministry of Commerce & Industry (CIM) under the leadership of Shri Piyush Goyal
Hon. Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, is constantly engaging Plastics exporters, which
mostly comprises MSMEs is very heartening.
The growth in Plastics’ exports in the first quarter of FY’ 22 reflects the tremendous efforts and
the entrepreneurial spirit of Indian exporters, who posted growth despite facing many challenges
during the pandemic. I am sure Plastics Industry shall definitely respond positively to our PM’s
call and contribute as usual.
Wishing everyone Happy Independence Day!
