          Dear Akhileshji,
On behalf of UN Environment, I wish to express my deepest gratitude for your valuable contribution to make World Environment
          Day celebrations a success.
This year’s theme – Beat Plastic Pollution – resonated with citizens in India and in other parts of the globe. We saw millions of
people coming together and organizing thousands of events across the world.
One of the main legacies of the World Environment Day 2018 is the Government of India announcement and commitment to
ban all single use plastics as part of their support to the CleanSeas campaign. This triggered nine additional countries joining the
          campaign.
The announcement was a powerful finale after weeks of intensive pan India clean-up activities and events seeing millions of Indians
          – citizens, policymakers, celebrities, business Moghuls, innovators, environmentalists and activists – come together to collectively
          take action on plastics pollution.
I’m pleased to inform you about some of our notable achievements during the World Environment Day week such as, India’s iconic
landmark Taj Mahal, along with 100 other monuments to become litter-free to protect the country’s historical landmarks from plastic
pollution; the State of Maharashtra launched an urban e-mobility program to scale back emissions; Hyderabad pledged to be single-
use plastics free by 2022; and the State of Andhra Pradesh launched a scale-out plan to transition 6 million farms from conventional
synthetic chemical agriculture to zero-Budget Natural Farming.
From Hollywood to Bollywood, from the corporate world to community groups, our #BeatPlasticPollution tag game took off and went
viral on social media. #WorldEnvironmentDay hashtag trended as number one topic globally. The on-line chatter on 5 June resulted
          in 1.38 million tweets globally.
Your support to Afroz Shah’s Versova beach clean-up efforts and your contribution to help address Beat Plastic Pollution for World
Environment Day was much appreciated as it helped us to amplify our messages globally.
In the end, this World Environment Day was so much more than we could have imagined so once again thank you very much for
your support. Our work on plastic pollution does not end with World Environment Day. We count on your continued support so that
together we can make single-use plastic history.
          Thanks
          Mr. Akhilesh Bhargava

          Environment & Recycling Committee, AIPMA
