Beyond PC and PBT: The New Economics of LED Down-
lights and Bulb Housing Materials
An engineered polypropylene compound is
closing a decade-old gap in LED downlights and
Bulb Housing manufacturing. Here’s why, what,
and how we built the case for this thriving indus-
try.
We asked several LED downlight and bulb hous-
ing manufacturers one simple question, and that
is - Why does every downlight body and bulb
housing still go into PC or PBT? Surprisingly, the
answers have been revolving around ‘Because
that's what we've always used’. Nobody built the
alternative. And so, nobody switched. We ques-
tioned this norm and decided to build a custom
solution for the industry.

A DECADE-OLD DEFAULT
Back when LED lighting was scaling up in India,
that default made complete sense. PC gave
downlight bodies the shine and toughness a
visible part needs. PBT gave bulb housings the
heat resistance a driver compartment demands.
Good calls, both — for their time. What nobody
planned for was revisiting that choice once vol-
umes went from thousands of units to billions,
and every gram and every degree started show-
ing up on the P&L.
