Queensland commits $2.5 million for solar panel recycling scheme
In response to the mounting issue of end-of-life solar panels, the Queensland government has committed $2.5 million to
a solar panel recycling program headed by the Smart Energy Council (SEC). The effort is to create an industry-led pilot
program to divert damaged or obsolete solar panels away from landfills and recycle their valuable materials in light of
estimates suggesting a significant increase in waste volume by 2030. The initiative, led by SEC CEO John Grimes, aims
to promote an industry-wide culture of responsible waste management while also providing guidance for best practices
in the processes of collection, disposal, and recovery. In addition to being in line with Queensland's high rooftop solar
penetration rate, this initiative not only aligns with Queensland's high rooftop solar penetration but also offers economic
opportunities for job creation and economic growth in the state.
